“There is treasure to be desired
and oil in the dwelling of the wise...”
Proverbs 21:20

Essential oils are perhaps the most exciting life-sustaining substances in the world. We can begin to understand and appreciate the complexities of essential oils when we learn about our own bodies and how they work.

If you compare blood tests from a newborn infant with those of a senior citizen both the baby and senior citizen will have the same beautiful red and white blood cells with perfect blood chemistry. The senior citizen’s hearing, eyesight, equilibrium, skin, and muscles will have diminished with age. Yet, we can use a transfusion of the senior citizen’s blood to give life to a child. The tissue may be old and weak, but the blood is alive and strong. Essential oils are similar.

With increasing pollution of air, water, and soil, we see plants degenerate, their fiber becoming thick, and their color becoming weak. Yet we see in the essential oil chemistry the same strong, vital life force it had 1000 years ago. The essential oil still carries the ability to regenerate, protect, and sustain life.

Essential oils may be able to reach deep into the recesses of our brain, cross over the chemical barriers, and open the hidden channels within our minds and bodies, allowing us to reach our potential.

Research has shown that the power found in pure essential oils may be a natural way to increase the life force, thus, the chemistry and kinetic energy of essential oils have the ability to help maintain and improve the body’s life force for optimal health.

Besides the power of their life force, essential oils have healing benefits derived from their chemistry. Some constituents of the oils, such as the aldehydes found in lavender and chamomile, are calming. Eugenol found in cinnamon and clove is antiseptic and stimulating. Ketones found in lavender, hyssop, and patchouly stimulate cell regeneration and liquefy mucus. Sesquiterpenes, predominant in frankincense and sandalwood, are soothing to inflamed tissue.

Phenols found in oregano and thyme oil are highly antimicrobial. Research by Dr. Jean C. Lapraz in 1985 has shown that microbes could not live in the presence of the essential oils cinnamon or oregano. This is significant as we face life-threatening, drug-resistant viruses and bacteria.

The value of essential oils is so immense. Some essential oils are fast acting. When applied to the feet, they can travel throughout the body and affect the cells, including the hair, within 20 minutes. When applied directly to the skin they are soluble with the lipid membranes of cell walls and have an unmatched ability to penetrate cells and disperse within minutes throughout the body. The effects of a single application may last for up to five months; yet because of their volatility and high evaporation rate, essential oils do not accumulate in the body, their chemical structure is metabolized in the cells like other nutrients.

Various ways of using essential oils can bring you a wide range of benefits---from uplifting you emotionally or healing you physically. They can be used to flavor your food or cleaning the dishes and their fragrance is one of man’s greatest enjoyments, bringing back memories and creating feelings of security, and well-being.
